Got my first speeding ticket (74 in a 55) last night driving home after a party at a friends place. Normally, on the stretch of highway I was pulled over on, I’m pretty careful late at night to not do more than 5 over since the speed limit is so low and there is minimal extra light at night, but this particular night, being exhausted after working my third 65 hr week, and being out late, I wasn’t paying attention to my speed. I passed the usual spot where cops may sit and went around the next bend and son of a bitch was hiding on an off-ramp behind the exit sign. my lights didn’t show me the the cop car (gold, unmarked Charger) until I was already on top of him and saw his headlights pop on and there went my clean driving record. And it wasn’t even a state trooper, it was a fucking county cop who clearly was just out there for revenue collection.

¯\_()_/¯ guess I’ll just pay the $180 fine and move on.

Can you do a defensive driving class to have it removed from your record?

19 over the limit, damn. That’s Reckless Endangerment in some states. $180 not so bad though.

$180? In California, you’d be well north of five hundred clams.

Around 3 hundred ish clams. Plus then average CA highway speed is 80 when dry.

I’m going to call the court to see if that is something I can do without having to go to court. If I have to go to court first to take the course, I’m just going to pay the fine.

Laws may vary, but here in TX, I just completed a DD course for a seatbelt ticket. I did not have to go to court. I just went to the Justice of the Peace and paid my court costs at a window, then took the class online. When I was done, the DD company mailed me a certificate of completion, then I took that and a copy of my driving record back to the same office and had the ticket removed. Never had to see da judge. Court costs + DD course = the same amount as the ticket. Imagine that.

Take it to court, be honest, tell the judge you are willing to pay the fine you just want to avoid the points, point to your prior lack of record as evidence that you do not do this all the time. You’ll probably get a lowered fine and fewer(or zero) points. Getting the points dropped is far more important because that will easily cost you over $180 in the long run.

I’ve contested almost all of my tickets and I’ve gotten all of them lowered in both fines and points(Crowning moment was a 98 in a 50 lowered to 9 over with the fine cut to a 1/3 of initial amount and no points). Just be polite when you get in front of the judge, yes sir and no sir are a must. Having good manners will get you out of quite a bit.

Yeah, I managed to get my first speeding ticket a few months ago (road I was on went from a 55 to a 45, cop said I did not slow down on time, I still don’t believe him) and here in Texas, what I did was just pay part of the fine (110 of a 165$ ticket) and paid for a 25$ defensive driving course and after some other fees everything worked out to the initial 165$, the main difference it that the defensive driving kept the ticket off my record and kept my insurance rates from taking a jump.

I got pulled over doing 93 in a 65. Wrote me up for 85. Easy money for Nowheresville, USA.

You can do a lot of stuff in AZ that’s illegal elsewhere.

Do that and then pay the fine in full. Also try to go to the court and plead not guilty. You’ll meet with a district attorney. When you speak with him, tell him you paid the fine in full, explain your perfectly clean driving record, and try and either get the ticket dropped from your record or the speed listed on your record lowered.

Last year in Feb. I got a really high speeding ticket for being an idiot. Up until that point I had a perfectly clean record. I immediately paid the ($250) fine in full and then I went to the court, signed on a piece of paper that I was pleading not guilty, and was immediately scheduled to meet with the district attorney a month later. I then met with the attorney, explained my clean record, and they lowered the speed listed on my record. Had I not been going so far over, there’s a chance I could have had the ticket dropped entirely. I never had to sit in front of a judge or wait in line at the court for anything. It was a quick in and out process. Unfortunately, Wisconsin doesn’t “do” safe driving courses for speeding tickets so that wasn’t an option for me, but having the speed on my record lowered does keep my insurance rates lower. Trust me, it’s worth your time.
